Presentation Overview

Culturally Responsive NDBI Practice: Understanding Family Values, Avoiding Assumptions, and Adapting Support Across Cultures

This presentation explores how behavior technicians can support the implementation of Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) in ways that are culturally responsive, relationship-centered, and ethically grounded while maintaining fidelity to evidence-based practice. Because NDBI occurs within everyday routines such as play, meals, dressing, transitions, and family interactions, intervention is never culturally neutral. Family values, language, routines, beliefs about learning, communication styles, privacy, religion, and caregiving expectations all influence how intervention is experienced and implemented. Designed specifically for behavior technicians, this practical session focuses on helping participants recognize how culture shapes child interactions, family priorities, motivation, communication, reinforcement, play, and expectations for independence. Participants will learn how to avoid common assumption traps, ask respectful routine-based questions, document observations objectively, and identify when concerns or needed adaptations should be brought to the supervising clinician. The presentation emphasizes that culturally responsive practice is not about abandoning evidence-based intervention or “changing the culture.” Instead, it is about improving fit, participation, trust, and sustainability by embedding NDBI strategies within the child’s real-life routines, relationships, and family context.
